In her early days at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Verma Skankthrup had been able to tell model, year and fuel capacity of almost any motorized military vehicle at a distance of 1 mile...now, with the creep of old age and waxy hearing loss, she was painfully naked in the face of death...better she had been naked in the face of Hermes Crankwell, her 81 year old neighbor and 'handyman'. But it was not to be.
